In 1960 the Guinness company opened a new chapter at the Great Northern Brewery in Dundalk, in the border county of Louth. The venture took its name and emblem from the Irish harp — a national symbol that had long been stamped on Guinness barrels.
The northern town gained a brewing identity all its own, and the harp, carried from cask to label, became one of the most familiar marks in Irish brewing.
